The oils transform into soap and glycerin. No heat is applied after mixing, which preserves the integrity of the oils and keeps the naturally occurring glycerin in the bar where it belongs.

After pouring, the bars cure for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks. That cure time isn't optional. It's what drives off excess water, hardens the bar, and produces a long-lasting lather. Rush it and you get a soft bar that dissolves in a week. Do it right and you get something that holds up through a full workday.

One important note: lye sounds intimidating, but there is no lye remaining in a properly made cold-process bar. The saponification reaction consumes it entirely. What's left is soap.

What Gets Stripped Out of Commercial Bars

Commercial soap manufacturers figured out early on that glycerin, the natural byproduct of saponification, is worth more as a standalone product than it is left in a bar of soap. So they remove it. That glycerin ends up in lotions, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Your "soap" gets synthetic fillers and detergents to make up the difference.
